July 2008

In case you couldn’t tell from the giant picture of the album art on the splash page, or from the slightly smaller picture of it to the right, my new EP “Intercosm” is coming very soon - August, to be specific. I used the money from my last (extremely low budget) release, “Evolution,” to finance this extremely-low-budget-but-slightly-higher-than-last-time release. All the tracks were brilliantly mastered by Dave Locke and the sound quality is fantastic - much, much better than that of “Evolution.” It will be available on iTunes and all other major digital retailers mid-August, and physical copies WILL be available in September. Thanks for listening! For more info click the picture to the right.

Also, to promote awareness about the new EP, I have a new

YouTube video of a recent performance of the first track on the

EP, “Work in Progress.” I spent over a year writing it (which is

a long time for me) and I consider it to be my best work

compositionally. There’s a story behind it that I put on

YouTube. Enjoy!

In other news, I just got back from the 2008 Mark O’Connor San Diego Strings Conference, which was
(as always) an absolutely extraordinary experience. Mark O’Connor’s conferences, in case you haven’t heard about them, bring together some of the world’s best alternative styles string musicians (violin, viola and cello) for a week of masterclasses, amazing concerts, and sick jam sessions. I can honestly say that last year’s and this year’s conferences helped make me the player I am today. For example, my song “Intercosm” - the title track off the new EP - was written after last year’s strings conference. There’s one in New York next summer and I’ll definitely be there, and if you’re an alternative styles string player you should check it out too. Click the picture to the right for more information.

Finally, I’ll be moving to New York City in a couple of weeks because I really want to pay too much for coffee. I’m doing a couple more DC area gigs and then it’s off to Manhattan for college! I’ll probably be taking a break from gigs for a while to get settled in the city, but look out for Mahattan gigs in the next few months or so. Exciting times ahead, exciting times.

September 2008

Just a quick note to let you know that physical copies of “Intercosm” are now available! The physical copies include three tracks remastered from “Evolution,” as well as superb art by Carol Lee. It’s up on CDBaby.com, click the picture below to see it.

In other news, I’m now officially in New York City now. Woo!

October 2008

For all you New York people out there, I’m playing my first NYC gig at Don Hill’s on October 29th! It’s, a groovy rock venue, so I'll be doing a more rock-oriented set. Don Hill's is usually 21+, but they made an exception by putting me on really early at 7:15, with doors at 7 so it's 18+. That was really cool of them. The thing is, because I'm new to the city, I don't know a ton of people quite yet... so if you know anyone who might be vaguely interested in hearing a half asian kid squeak distorted violin for 40 minutes, please let them know :)

I have some other gigs lined up for the next couple of months, but I still have to confirm dates. Hope to see you there!

I run everything through an AER Acoustic Alpha, a tiny little amp that produces a hugely powerful sound. It was built for acoustic guitars, but it amplifies the violin just as well. Not only does it offer gorgeous violin tone, but it’s ridiculously small and ridiculously loud. I’ve used it to play for a small audience of 20 and a large audience of 1,000 and I didn’t need a PA system for either. It’s extraordinary.

Normal wooden bows are fine for acoustic violins, but the electric violin needs more power and control. The carbon fiber Codabow Electric was built to be used on violins with more than four strings, and it grips the C string a lot tighter than any wooden bow. It’s also got an awesome look, as the carbon fiber coloring makes it change from purple to blue to green depending on the light. It’s a quality affordable bow.
